(San Anselmo) - Design duo Jennifer Hershon and Jo Ann Hartley create spaces that embrace the human factor. Inspired by connecting with their clients, the co-founders of this five-year-old firm seek to design interiors in which clients don't just live, but prosper. By seamlessly integrating interior architecture and interior design, Hershon and Hartley create clean, classic spaces that radiate warmth and personality, and which always capture the unique qualities of the owner. So whether it's a Napa residence or a Tiburon vacation home, Hershon and Hartley's projects just feel good to live in.

"Every one of our projects takes its cue from the client. We really strive to create functional and livable spaces that respect their needs," says Hartley. Adds Hershon, "We believe in client/designer relationships that grow and evolve and ultimately stand the test of time - just like the spaces we design."

Featuring open, flowing floor plans, serene colors and natural textures, those spaces unfold gracefully, and meticulous attention to detail gives them polish and poise. With thirty years' of experience between them, Hershon and Hartley are also masters of project management, enabling them to deliver impeccable execution. "Our goal is to maintain balance between the design process and its implementation," notes Hershon.

A recent project in Marin exemplifies their work: an integrated space where architecture and interior, form and function come together beautifully. The owners of the home wanted to entertain in style, but their kitchen was small and outdated, and couldn't accommodate their guests. Hershon and Hartley completely redesigned the interior architecture, opening up the space and giving it a clean, contemporary look. They brought warmth to the room by enfolding it in rich wood, from the cozy beamed ceiling to custom cherry cabinetry. Glass, copper, granite and stainless steel give the kitchen modern polish, as does the finishing touch: a dramatic custom lighting soffit, suspended from the pitched ceiling by brushed stainless steel rods. Says Hartley, "It's now an ideal spot to gather with guests, or just have dinner for two."

With a full slate of projects on the boards from Pacific Heights to Napa, Hershon and Hartley moved in 2007 to new studios and has expanded into new areas of design. But whatever the medium, their focus remains on their clients. "Designing a home often marks a milestone in a client's life - a marriage, birth, divorce, retirement," says Hershon. "We feel it's a privilege to be asked to create spaces that encompass those moments."
